The beautiful soaking rain of Summer has brought us gardeners confidently and happily into the refreshing days of Autumn. As the days grow shorter and the nights and mornings get cooler, there’s plenty of great stuff to be getting on with in the garden.
Here at the Sanctuary Point Garden Centre we look forward to lots of beautiful new arrivals during March these include hundreds of varieties of Camellias. Camellias have an abundance of gorgeous fleshy flowers in a palette of hot reds, deep pinks through to hot pink and onto baby pink and white. There’s also a pale yellow and a purple variety on the market for something a little bit different. Camellias have a rich dark green glossy leaf which adds to the charm of these beautiful shrubs.
Camellias flower from early autumn through to spring which brings much needed colour and texture into the garden during the dark and cold winter months.
Camellias love an acid soil, so always plant up with some specific potting mix and add Camellia specific fertiliser on a regular basis. The different species of Camellias include Sasanqua, Japonica, Reticulata and Olifera. Most species prefer a full shade to part shade position, however Sasanqua are happy to be planted in a full sun position.
Camellias can be used in so many ways in the garden, they look fantastic as specimens in pots, ground cover Camellias look stunning in hanging baskets and as a flowing border and by far the most exquisite look is a hedge of white of pink flowering Camellias as they look full and glossy for the whole year with the added beauty of flowers during Autumn and Winter, just stunning!
Another Autumn favourite are Azaleas, with their dark green foliage and an abundance of bright and colourful flower clusters, these shrubs are perfect for a shady spot in the garden or full sun, depending on the variety you choose.
Seed Garlic is a popular purchase this month for all the veg and herb growers, we have Australian Seed Garlic available and ready for planting now.
